By the late 1930s, the German medical establishment viewed mental illnesses, lax morality and criminality as signs of racial inferiority. It was this letter of September 1, 1939, coinciding with the distraction of the invasion of Poland, in which Hitler authorized specific physicians to euthanize German citizens who were incurably ill or undesirable.
