Private Collection. My paternal family's Ukrainian last name was Gorodezky. By my father's teens, two of his older brothers were in Palestine, and he was teaching underground classes on Zionism. He assumed he would join them when he got older. Plans changed with the outbreak of World War I, the Russian Revolution and the loss of his family's home and money. By the 1930s, the three brothers were in New York, having kept the (Anglicized) Hebrew version of their name taken up by the older ones in Palestine, Erony. Both the Russian and Hebrew names refer to city dwellers. The brothers' task was to bring as many of their family to the United States as they could.
