Collection The Museum at Hebrew Union College, NY. 1993–2004. I began this piece in 1993, at the end of a cycle of work addressing the Holocaust. The title is from Primo Levi's If This Be a Man, a concentration camp guard's response to a question of Levi's. It finally gave me an answer to my own, ever present question, "why?" I went back to this canvas in 2004. I encrusted and textured the surface and added rust as a color, aging it in the way that my question and the guard's answer seem to me now.
