Collection Cape Ann Museum. My Father's Coat is the culmination of work I began in 1989 on mass murder in the 20th century. My father was a Ukrainian pogrom refugee whose character was severely affected by seeing four of his brothers murdered by Cossacks, and by his own imprisonments as a young man. This piece brought my concerns of twelve years of work home to my own family and my father, where the concerns all began. I used my father's actual cut up overcoat, one I wore for years after he died, to build the underlying form of the haystack in which three of his brothers were murdered. The embedded photographs are facsimiles of ones taken in Stalin's gulag immediately before the victims pictured were executed.
