The title is from Primo Levi\u2019s &lt;em&gt;If This Be a Man&lt;\/em&gt;, a concentration camp guard\u2019s response to a question of Levi\u2019s. It finally gave me an answer to my own, ever present question, \u201cwhy?\u201d&lt;br\/&gt;&lt;br\/&gt; I went back to this canvas in 2004. I encrusted and textured the surface and added rust as a color, aging it in the way that my question and the guard\u2019s answer seem to me now. They include a letter written in 1938 by leading German industrialist Baron von Thyssen, to other of his nation\u2019s top industrialists in support of Hitler. That support saved the NSDAP (&lt;em&gt;Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartein&lt;\/em&gt;), or the Nazi Party, in 1932. The party had run out of money. &lt;br\/&gt;&lt;br\/&gt; The remaining photographs are images from a large map showing all levels of German prison camps. Thyssen headed the largest steel trust at the time in Germany. I cannot imagine what it would be like to be a soldier in war on any side. I have a basic concept, as an American child of the 1960\u2019s, of the possibilities of resistance and of a consideration for the humanity of others. But I cannot say what I would do in extreme circumstances of oppression or war. Would I commit atrocities? Would I be brave? Would I watch out for my neighbors or turn them in? Would I protect others?
