It is accompanied by violence and terror, including rape and murder as tools of mobilization, and destruction of cultural artifacts, institutions, homes and monuments. My father was a Ukrainian pogrom refugee whose character was severely affected by seeing four of his brothers murdered by Cossacks, and by his own imprisonments as a young man. This piece brought my concerns of twelve years of work home to my own family and my father, where the concerns all began. &lt;br\/&gt;&lt;br\/&gt; I used my father\u2019s actual cut up overcoat, one I wore for years after he died, to build the underlying form of the haystack in which three of his brothers were murdered. The embedded photographs are facsimiles of ones taken in Stalin&#039;s gulag immediately before the victims pictured were executed. Home is where we can be ourselves and private, where we can afford to be vulnerable, and where we gain strength to be in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Discrimination, economic hardship, ethnic cleansing, genocide, war, famine and natural causes have sent people searching and begging for new places to live. These migrations have reshaped the world, politics and societies over and over again.
